Add This Superhero Ingredient to Your Skincare Routine—Here's Why!

Are you currently experiencing the frustration of looking in the mirror and seeing a tired, lacklustre complexion? If your skin feels dry, dull or tight it's time to introduce a game-changing ingredient: Hyaluronic Acid. While you might have heard about its benefits before, let's explore why Hyaluronic Acid might be the missing piece in your skincare routine.

Fine lines or signs of dehydration?

  • It's easy to panic if you look in the mirror and see what appear to be fine lines. However, those lines could actually be your skin's way of telling you it's dehydrated.

  • Dehydration lines are caused by a lack of water content in the skin, which causes the skin to lose elasticity and plumpness. Keeping your skin hydrated both internally and externally is the key to getting rid of these pesky lines.

  • Other signs that your skin might be dehydrated are excess oiliness, skin tightness, itchiness, chapped lips and dark undereye circles.

How can hyaluronic acid keep my skin hydrated?

  • Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which means it absorbs moisture from the environment. It is capable of absorbing around 1000 times its weight in water, making it the perfect ingredient to restore your skin's moisture levels!

  • Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the human body, but as we age our ability to produce it decreases.

  • Using a hyaluronic acid based skincare product will help keep the skin plump, hydrated and young as it takes water from the environment and deposits it into the skin, keeping it hydrated for long periods of time.

Not all hyaluronic acid serums are created equal

  • When considering which product to buy, the determining factor will be the molecular weight of the hyaluronic acid used. If you've ever bought a serum and felt it sit on top of your skin without increasing hydration, it likely contained large hyaluronic acid molecules, which absorb more water but cannot penetrate the skin.

  • Look for a serum which uses a mix of medium and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid.

  • My current favourite is Uriage H.A. Booster Serum, which uses a mix of medium/low and very low weight hyaluronic acid and is enriched with Aquaxyl and marshmallow flower extract. I love this product because it is made for extremely sensitive skin and has a 97% natural origin formula in a sustainable, 100% recyclable glass bottle.

  • An easy way to increase the efficiency of your hyaluronic acid is to apply it to damp skin. I like to spray Uriage Thermal Water onto my skin before applying my serum and sealing it in with a moisturiser.

What about injectable hyaluronic acid?

  • While skincare products are effective over a long period of time, sometimes you just want to give your skin an immediate boost of hydration.

  • Hyaluronic acid based fillers can be injected onto the entire surface of the skin during a procedure known as mesotherapy to rejuvenate, plump and smooth the surface of the skin.

  • This procedure is extremely effective for rejuvenating the skin, which is why it is commonly referred to as a Beauty Booster treatment. For best results look for a dermal filler designed specifically to redensify the skin and protect it from oxidative damage, such as Teoxane Teosyal Redensity 1.

  • Please note that such a treatment can only be done by a licensed medical doctor.
